The Socio-Economic Impact of Large-Scale Land Acquistition in Sierra Leone: A Case Study of Sahn-Malen Chiefdom

Abstract
Large-scale land purchases are now a widespread international phenomenon, impacting communities, economies, and ecosystems. The research investigates the effects of such acquisitions, Sierra Leonean chiefdom of Shan Malen, particularly following a significant lease agreement with SOCFIN Agricultural Company in 2011.
The study comprehensively examines livelihood shifts, economic changes, social disruptions, and environmental and cultural consequences resulting from the land acquisition system in the study area. Nine villages were purposefully selected from the Upper Pemba section of the Chiefdom district based on the acquisition scale and community vulnerability.
A hybrid research methodology was utilized, integrating both qualitative and qualitative data gathering. This included face-to-face interviews with 100 farmers, nine community leaders, government officials, and representatives from the company, talks in focus groups with three groups from the local community.
Primary data encompasses aspects such as the leasehold system, land ownership status of farmers, changes in livelihood practices pre- and post-acquisition, socioeconomic impacts, and compensation practices by the government and company. Key findings highlight a notable shift in land ownership dynamics, with industrial companies now holding the majority of land, leading to reduced reliance on farming and the emergence of alternative income sources.
The post-acquisition scenario brings challenges such as financial constraints, limited access to arable land, and social disruptions. However, it also presents opportunities such as job creation and infrastructure improvements. Environmental and cultural impacts are evident, including declines in traditional agricultural practices and disruptions in knowledge transmission
